Following recommendations from the Environment Agency, Durham County Council have committed £1.5 million in funding, and are applying for additional funds, to open up a stretch of the Cong Burn in Chester-le-Street.
This is designed to help prevent flooding, but it is hoped that transforming the area will have significant economic benefits to the town. David Haswell, Community Campaigner, commented "In addition to potential economic impact, opening up the burn will see some natural beauty brought to the town centre. While the market stalls will be removed, it is good to see the memorial will remain in place, and not be affected by the improvements"
Working hard all year round.
