Fly tipping in and around our village is a constant blight on our roads, country lanes and footpaths.Unfortunately, many areas in and around Great Lumley are fly tipping hot spots, used by individuals, tradespeople and small businesses to dump waste.
"In recent months, I've made a significant number of reports to the council to request fly tipped rubbish is removed", said Michael Peacock, Community Campaigner. "This has included over 15 bags of garden waste, several kitchen appliances, and countless car tyres."
While the council does make an effort to remove the waste, more needs to be done to tackle these hotspots in the area.
Recent statistics from Durham County Council have shown an increase in fly tipping, including a 29% increase in kitchen appliances and other white goods. Between April 2017 and September 2017, only 18 incidents were caught on CCTV across the whole of County Durham, despite there being over 7000 incidents reported in the 12 months leading up to September. This is despite the council deploying covert cameras to key locations.
Michael added, "Over the course of three weeks, I reported three separate incidents at the same location. It isn't enough for the council to occasionally remove the rubbish, they need to pro-actively prevent it. The current covert CCTV cameras are clearly not working, either they are not deployed to the right location, or are not enough of a deterrent."
Working hard all year round.
